Apu `Awa Workshop
Many Hawaiian cultural practices use the `awa ceremony as one of the rituals
that connect the practitioner with the deities. It is therefore crucial
that the appropriate supplies are available for the ceremony.
On-going workshops to make apu `awa (`awa cups) have been underway since the summer of 2002.
From gathering the coconuts, husking, taking out the coconut meat, cutting,
and now sanding, the work has slowly continued. It is painstaking
and slow work but one that brings the practitioner closer to the importance
of each aspect of Hawaiian culture.
All of this is in preparation for the launching of Maui's open ocean voyaging canoe.
What a day it will be when the canoe is launched and 100 'awa cups are distributed,
100 pahu drums are sounded, and hundreds of people cheer.
