Kahili Award—Keep It Hawai’i

Kauahea received the prestigious Kahili Award from the Hawai’i Tourism Authority for its 15th annual Keep It Hawaii campaign. The Keep It Hawai’i Recognition Awards honors those who have demonstrated commitment to honor and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture community providing visitors and residents with opportunities to experience the true culture through creative and responsible efforts.

 

Kauahea received the award for Ka ‘Aha Hula ‘O Hālauaola 2005 World Conference on Hula which was held in Kahului, Maui.  More than 1,200 people from around the world converged on Maui for a week-long conference of hula and Hawaiian culture.

Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla and Pā‘ū O Hiaka, through the Maui Arts & Culture Center, has received a significant grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to re-create the hula drama called KAHEKILI.  It is a two year project  that will bring back to the stage the 1997 hula drama which includes several Maui hālau (hula schools) dance, chant, warfare reenactments, celebrations, and cultural protocols.

 

The Hawai’i premiere will be at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in September 2007.  The production will then tour various cities on the continental U.S in 2007 & 2008.
