2003 Pahu Workshop

Kauahea Inc. and Na Lehuakumakua completed a three-weekend workshop on pahu making.   It was held at the Maui Community College on Feb. 8-9, 15-16, and 22-23, 2003.  The kumu and master carver was Mr. Keoni Aweau-Turalde of Hilo.

Each of the participants committed to completing their pahu during the three weeks. The participants could elect to work singly or in pairs and both methods were used during the workshop.   Although no previous experience was needed, some of the participants were return students who wanted to make another pahu and to increase their skills.  By the end of the workshop there were about 15 pahu or lapaiki completed.
