Kauahea Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which was formed in 1994 to support and promote Hawaiian culture. This is being accomplished through programs and projects located primarily on the island of Maui.
One of the first goals of Kauahea is to create a Hawaiian learning center on Maui. Toward this goal Kauahea has become a partner in Piko A‘o LLC which purchased land in Waihe‘e, Maui. This land is known as Paeloko and will be the foundation and land-base for the educational goals of Kauahea.
Hula was the vehicle for Kauahea’s first educational programs and continues to be an important part of the educational focus. Kauahea supports the activities of Pā‘ū O Hi‘iaka and its efforts to convey Hawaiian cultural knowledge through the hālau learning system as well as other activities connected to hula. Please see the Pa’u O Hi’iaka page for more information about its classes and activities.
Kauahea continues its cultural education plans by offering workshops, conferences, classes and other cultural programs. The Hawaiian Cultural Practices Institute provides opportunities to deepen and expand a person’s knowledge of Hawaiian culture. The two special programs currently underway are the Nā Mea No‘eau workshops with master cultural practitioners and the Paeloko—malama ‘āina project for hands-on experience. Please see our Programs & Projects page for on-going and past activities. |
